Empire-style portico clock in black marble and mercury-gilde - Lot 112
Empire-style portico clock in black marble and mercury-gilded bronze, 'Molbrucker à Saverne', early 19th century Elegant Empire-style portico clock in polished black marble, adorned with finely chiseled and mercury-gilded bronze mounts. The architectural composition rests on two cylindrical columns supporting an entablature topped by a triangular pediment inspired by ancient architecture. The ensemble is embellished with foliage garlands, rosettes, and a central urn motif—elements emblematic of the First Empire’s neoclassical decorative repertoire. The white enamel dial with Roman numerals is signed “Molbrucker à Saverne,” a clockmaker active in Alsace in the early 19th century. Suspended between the columns, it is framed by an openwork gilded bronze mount. The visible pendulum, decorated with a radiating mask motif, adds an extra decorative touch and emphasizes the lightness of the structure. This clock is a fine example of the Empire style’s taste for architectural forms inspired by antiquity. The combination of black marble and mercury-gilded bronze lends the piece an elegant and balanced presence. Note: a section of the bronze frame is missing on the left side of the dial, along with a few small chips and signs of wear on the edges of the marble, consistent with its age and use. Details: Height: 40 cm – Width: 24.5 cm – Depth: 9 cm – Weight: 5 kg
