Tutsi Agaseke basket with polychrome geometric decoration - Rwanda - mid 20th century Tutsi "Agaseke" covered basket from Rwanda, woven from plant fibers using a fine, regular basketry technique. The container is ovoid in shape, topped by a conical lid with a small top handle. The linear black and purplish-pink geometric decoration runs horizontally around the body, contrasting with the natural beige background. The edge of the lid is highlighted with green-tinted braiding. Agaseke baskets were used in the domestic context to store and display foodstuffs and valuables, and played an important role in Rwandan material culture. Showing traces of use and age.
