Pietà – Virgin of Mercy, carved polychrome wood – Antique work, probably 16th–17th century
An important religious sculpture carved from wood and painted in polychrome, depicting the Virgin of Mercy, seated and holding the body of Christ on her lap after the Descent from the Cross.
The Virgin, her face etched with sorrow and reverence, wears a long red dress and a dark cloak. Christ, depicted in a state of utter surrender, lies with his limbs hanging limply at his sides.
The sculpture retains its original polychrome paintwork in shades of red, black, and flesh tones, emphasizing the expressive and devotional nature of this work.
Condition: Wear and loss of polychromy, old cracks in the wood, visible splits on the reverse and at the base, signs of age, and possible restorations.
Dimensions and weight: H. 37 × W. 17 × D. 10 cm – 2.500 kg.
