18th-Century French School – The Virgin and Child with the Y - Lot 52
18th-Century French School – The Virgin and Child with the Young Saint John the Baptist – Oil on wood panel Description: A significant and elegant religious painting depicting the Virgin Mary accompanied by the Infant Jesus and the Child Saint John the Baptist, in a classical composition imbued with gentleness and serenity. The Virgin, dressed in a richly draped red gown and a flowing blue cloak, is depicted seated in a wooded landscape. She gently cradles the Infant Jesus, while the young Saint John the Baptist—recognizable by his animal skin and staff—presents her with fruit. The work stands out for the remarkable finesse of the facial rendering, the softness of the skin tones, the elegance of the poses, and the richness of the fabrics. The tender expressions of the figures and the subtle play of light lend the composition a great sense of harmony. This composition follows the tradition of 18th-century French religious painting, characterized by its refinement, sensitivity, and classical inspiration. Oil on wood panel, set in a large old frame of wood and gilded stucco, richly decorated with acanthus leaves and decorative friezes. Condition: Appears to be in good overall condition. A network of craquelure is visible on the paint layer, along with signs of age and slight wear. Some scuffing and small areas where the gilding on the frame is missing. School: French, stylistic attribution. Period: 18th century or 19th century in the style of the 18th century, to be confirmed. Dimensions and weight: With frame: H. 144 × W. 119 cm – Without frame: H. 122 × W. 99 cm – 16 kg.
