19th-Century French School – Naval Battle Scene – Oil on can - Lot 51
19th-Century French School – Naval Battle Scene – Oil on canvas Description: A beautiful seascape depicting a major naval battle between several sailing warships in a bay dominated by an imposing mountainous landscape. In the foreground, a destroyed ship flying the British flag appears amid floating debris, while thick columns of black and ochre smoke rise above the sea. In the background, several warships flying the French flag maneuver amid cannon smoke, evoking the great naval clashes between European fleets. The composition stands out for the fine detail of the ships, the depth of the landscape, and the remarkable rendering of light and smoke effects. A work in the tradition of 19th-century French marine painters, reminiscent of the compositions of Louis Garneray and Louis-Philippe Crépin, though not formally attributed. Oil on canvas, presented in a substantial old frame of wood and gilded stucco, richly adorned with acanthus leaves and decorative friezes. Condition: Appears to be in good overall condition. Craquelure and signs of age on the painted surface. Some wear and minor losses to the frame’s gilding. Dimensions and weight: With frame: H. 66 × W. 85 cm – Without frame: H. 40 × W. 57.5 cm – 8.500 kg. Dimensions and weight: With frame: H. 66 × W. 85 cm – Without frame: H. 40 × W. 57.5 cm – 8.500 kg.
