Wrought-iron pharmacy cork-crusher, 19th century
Antique pharmacy cork press dating from the first half of the 19th century, made of wrought iron and featuring a turned wooden handle. This instrument was used to compress corks in order to soften them and make it easier to insert them into glass bottles. The hinged mechanism features several openings of varying diameters, allowing the compression to be adjusted to the size of the stopper. The piece is mounted on a rectangular, molded wooden base, likely added for display purposes. This antique piece bears a patina from use and signs of oxidation consistent with its age.
Details: First half of the 19th century. Wrought iron and wood. Base 8 × 25.5 cm. Total length 29 cm.
