Antique Maritime Hourglass, Europe, 18th Century - Lot 39
Antique Maritime Hourglass, Europe, 18th Century Antique European maritime hourglass attributed to the 18th century, circa 1750–1800, designed to measure short intervals when calculating a ship’s speed using a log line. It consists of two blown-glass bulbs containing light-colored sand, joined at the center by a cord made of natural fibers and protected by a cylindrical wooden frame composed of four vertical posts and two circular discs. The wood exhibits a beautiful antique patina, signs of use, small chips, cracks, and old tunnels made by wood-boring insects. The bulbs appear intact and still contain their sand. This type of instrument was turned upside down while the log line was being paid out to determine the ship’s speed in knots. The exact duration of the flow, stated as thirty seconds, remains to be verified by timing. Height: 12.5 cm. Materials: wood, blown glass, sand, and natural fibers. Details: Origin: Europe; Period: attributed to the 18th century, circa 1750–1800; Object: Maritime hourglass or log hourglass; Materials: Wood, blown glass, sand, and natural fibers, Height: 12.5 cm, Condition: Age-related wear, small losses, cracks, and old insect tunnels; duration of the flow to be verified.
