17th century – Attributed to Meindert Hobbema – Landscape - Lot 112
17th century – Attributed to Meindert Hobbema – Landscape
A beautiful 17th-century Dutch landscape, oil on oak panel, depicting a thatched-roof country house situated on the banks of a lock or waterway, surrounded by tall trees and enlivened by several figures and animals in the foreground. The composition, architecture, and wooded landscape bear strong similarities to the work of Meindert Hobbema (Amsterdam 1638–1709), particularly his famous landscapes depicting watermills, locks, and rural dwellings. Hobbema returned several times to comparable sites and architectural motifs, which he depicted from different viewpoints. The panel’s horizontal format, the house with its illuminated roof, the hydraulic structure, the monumental trees, and the vast sky are fully in keeping with the 17th-century Dutch landscape tradition, of which Hobbema was one of the leading exponents. The work comes from a private estate in Liège, Belgium. To the best of our knowledge, no previous public sale of this painting has been identified to date. Photographs taken under UV light are available. As the work has not yet been examined by a recognized Hobbema specialist or subjected to dendrochronological analysis, the attribution must be considered provisional.
