Saint Bishop on an Oak Panel – 16th Century - Lot 108
Saint Bishop on an Oak Panel – 16th Century A rare antique panel painted on oak depicting a full-length portrait of a saint bishop, wearing a miter and holding his episcopal crozier. The figure, monumental and slender, stands out against a dark background and still retains beautiful traces of gilding and polychromy despite significant wear due to its age. The treatment of the face, clothing, and miter exhibits a transitional style between late Gothic and Renaissance traditions, consistent with a 16th-century work, likely from the former Southern Netherlands or the Lower Rhine region. The panel consists of two vertical oak boards joined together. The piece possesses a very beautiful decorative and historical presence, with an authentic antique surface, visible craquelure, losses, rubbing, and historical restorations. The reverse side was altered at a later date with the addition of a reinforcement panel and a hanging mechanism. A particularly evocative antique religious work, of interest both to a collector of old master paintings and for a distinctive interior. Period: 16th century | Probable origin: Southern Netherlands / Lower Rhine | Subject: Saint Bishop | Technique: Painting on oak panel | Dimensions: 71 × 30.5 cm | Support: Two vertical oak boards | Condition: Wear, losses, craquelure, and old restorations, consistent with its age | Back: Reinforcement and hanging mechanism added later
