Carved Oak Bishop, 16th century - Lot 89
Carved Oak Bishop, 16th century
An oak sculpture depicting a bishop in liturgical vestments and wearing a miter. Both hands, extended in front of the body, originally held attributes that are now missing. The treatment of the face, the folds of the vestments, and the overall composition are in keeping with the tradition of late 16th-century Gothic sculpture. The back, which is roughly carved and largely flat, suggests that the figure was intended for a church altarpiece or niche. Signs of wear, shrinkage cracks, old woodworm holes, and damage to the hands and miter.
Details: Period: 16th century – Material: carved oak – Height: 65 cm – Weight: 4,250 g.
