Mbala Statuette – Democratic Republic of the Congo – 20th ce - Lot 217
Mbala Statuette – Democratic Republic of the Congo – 20th century Wooden Mbala statuette depicting a seated woman. The figure has an elongated neck, a high forehead, and an elaborate hairstyle composed of several curved strands. The face, with a contemplative expression, is characterized by half-closed almond-shaped eyes, a straight nose, and full lips. The hands rest on either side of her prominent belly. Her bent legs and imposing feet rest on a circular base. The posture, the breasts, and the accentuated belly may evoke femininity, fertility, and motherhood. The sculpture is compact and expressive, with pronounced geometric forms and visible traces of hand carving. The wood has a beautiful reddish-brown hue, enhanced in places by a darker patina. Origin: Mbala, Democratic Republic of the Congo Material: wood Dimensions: 29 × 6 cm Condition: visible signs of use and age; see photographs for a complete view. Cultural attribution and dating cannot be confirmed with certainty based solely on the photographs.
