Polychrome Yaka Initiation Headdress, Congo - Lot 211
Polychrome Yaka Initiation Headdress, Congo A ritual headdress attributed to the Yaka people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, dating from the early 20th century. Crafted on a lightweight frame made of plant fibers and covered with fabric, it features a conical shape surrounded by four lateral projections. The surface retains a polychrome decoration in blue, green, white, and black, consisting of triangles, chevrons, lines, and dotted patterns. This piece likely served as the superstructure of an initiation mask of the ndeemba or n-kisyan-khanda type. Among the Yaka, these headdresses were associated with the male n-khanda ceremonies, marking the transition of young initiates to adulthood. Antique patina with signs of wear, distortions, loss of material and pigments, exposed threads, and small missing areas.
