Janus Figure, Kuba, Democratic Republic of the Congo - Lot 192
Janus Figure, Kuba, Democratic Republic of the Congo
A Janus figure attributed to the Kuba, dating from the early 20th century. Carved from dense wood with a dark patina, it features two female figures standing back-to-back and joined in an openwork vertical composition. The facing faces are adorned with finely grid-like patterns, while the long necks, outstretched arms, rounded bellies, and bent legs accentuate the symmetry of the whole. The openings between the heads, bodies, and legs reinforce the sculpture’s graphic quality. The object shows signs of wear, scuffs, small areas of material loss, and long-standing surface irregularities.
Details: Origin: Kuba, Democratic Republic of the Congo Date: Early 20th century Material: Carved wood Height: 41.5 cm Weight: 573 g
