Sepik Ceremonial Carved Wooden Bowl - Lot 188
Sepik Ceremonial Carved Wooden Bowl
A long, single-piece wooden bowl from the Sepik region of Papua New Guinea, dating from the first half of the 20th century. The tapered shape evokes a canoe or an aquatic animal, with carved ends and rims adorned with geometric patterns of chevrons and triangles. The deeply hollowed interior features a dark patina and numerous signs of wear, while the exterior retains a lighter brown hue. This type of vessel may have been used for presenting, sharing, or preparing food and other substances during communal or ceremonial gatherings.
