Luba Knife with Sheath, circa 1900 - Lot 186
Luba Knife with Sheath, circa 1900 An antique Luba knife featuring a wide, slightly curved iron blade, adorned with stamped motifs and bearing the engraved inscription “Polesha 12.” The dark wooden handle, carved and finished with a multi-lobed pommel, displays a deep patina from use. The knife comes with its wooden sheath, richly decorated with incised geometric motifs and secured with plant-fiber cords. The set attests to meticulous craftsmanship and a function likely linked to prestige as much as to personal use. Original condition with oxidation, wear, small cracks, and marks consistent with its age. Origin: Democratic Republic of the Congo, Luba  Date: Early 20th century  Materials: Iron, wood, plant fibers  Knife length: 54 cm  Length with sheath: 59 cm  Weight: 790 g
