Chokwe Maternity Statue, Angola / Democratic Republic of the - Lot 155
Chokwe Maternity Statue, Angola / Democratic Republic of the Congo—20th century A standing female figure carved from wood, depicted with a child seated in front of her. The mother holds a rounded vessel at the level of her abdomen, above the child’s head, in a composition evoking motherhood, fertility, and the passing down of traditions. The face displays typical Chokwe stylistic features: large almond-shaped eyes, finely modeled features, a protruding mouth, and an elaborate hairstyle adorned with geometric motifs. The mother’s and child’s foreheads are embellished with metal elements. Several nails or inserts are visible in the upper part of the head. The child wears a metal ring around the neck. Beautiful dark brown patina, with signs of use, cracks, wear, small chips, and erosion at the base, consistent with the object’s age and history. Dimensions: 32 × 11 cm; weight: 500 g.
