Large Songye Female Statue, Democratic Republic of the Congo - Lot 153
Large Songye Female Statue, Democratic Republic of the Congo—20th century
A standing female figure carved from wood, depicted in full face, with bent arms and hands pressed together over her abdomen. The oval face features large, almond-shaped eyes highlighted with a light pigment, a straight nose, and a slightly parted mouth revealing the teeth. The chest, abdomen, and pubic area are emphasized by powerful modeling and incised scarification marks.
The sculpture rests on an integrated circular base. It has a beautiful dark patina, with signs of use, wear, cracks, and small chips, particularly on the head and base.
Dimensions: 60 × 20 cm; weight: 2 kg.
