Holo/Kwese Mask, Angola / Democratic Republic of the Congo – - Lot 152
Holo/Kwese Mask, Angola / Democratic Republic of the Congo – 20th century
A wooden helmet mask featuring a stylized face with delicately sculpted features, enhanced with red, black, white, and light blue polychrome. The narrow eyes, triangular nose, and subtly suggested mouth lend the mask a serene expression. The black headdress is topped by a carved bird with outstretched wings. Some restoration or consolidation work is visible on the bird.
The mask is complemented by an abundant adornment of plant fibers attached around its lower portion, forming a wide cloak intended to conceal the wearer during ritual performances. Signs of use, wear, small missing sections, and alterations to the polychrome paint.
Dimensions: Height: 80 cm (including fibers) - Weight: 2.5 kg
