Luba Anthropomorphic Chair - Mwanza Workshop - Democratic Republic of the Congo - 19th century
A carved wooden chair, attributed to the Mwanza workshop, resting on an anthropomorphic female figure. The figure, rendered with elegance and balance, has her arms raised to support the seat, while her legs are bent and crossed behind her. The body is adorned with raised scarification marks, characteristic of the Luba aesthetic tradition.
The piece displays a beautiful, deep, and nuanced black plant-based patina, attesting to the object’s age and use. Work from the late 19th century.
