Polychrome Pende Mask, mid-20th century - Lot 128
Polychrome Pende Mask, mid-20th century
A carved wooden Pende mask featuring an elongated oval face with arched eyelids pierced by narrow slits for the eyes, a straight, prominently projecting nose, and a subtly suggested mouth. The upper part is topped by a three-pointed headdress, while the face retains traces of light, ochre, and dark brown pigments. The surface also shows traces of old varnish, particularly visible on the dark areas. The hollowed-out reverse side shows carving marks and several peripheral perforations intended for attaching an ornament. The piece possesses an expressive presence and a patina of wear consistent with its age.
