Kuba-Kete Mask, Democratic Republic of the Congo—20th centur - Lot 119
Kuba-Kete Mask, Democratic Republic of the Congo—20th century
A large helmet mask carved from dense wood, featuring a highly stylized face. The large, bulging eyes, outlined in black, dominate a face with pronounced brow ridges, a prominent nose, and a protruding mouth. Small perforations beneath the eyes and along the lower edge likely allowed for vision and the attachment of additional elements.
The surface is covered with a reddish-brown patina made from tukula powder, contrasting with the blackened areas of the headdress, eyes, and temples. The top is crowned with a large circular element featuring a ringed decoration. Beautiful patina from use. Visible cracks, wear, small losses, and old repairs—particularly on one side—attest to the object’s age and history of use.
Presented on a metal base.
Dimensions: 40 × 26 × 35 cm; weight: 1.3 kg.
