Tall Kuba wooden box – Congo, early 20th century - Lot 117
Tall Kuba wooden box – Congo, early 20th century
A tall, lidded box made of carved wood, attributed to the Kuba people of the Kasai region in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The slightly curved form is entirely adorned with lozenges, hatched triangles, and hourglass motifs—characteristic of the Kuba decorative vocabulary inspired by raffia textiles. The removable lid features an incised animal motif and, like the body, has two drilled lateral tenons that likely allowed it to be closed with a cord. The dark brown patina, signs of handling, and interior wear attest to its long history of use. An attribution to the Bakongo seems less likely, as the structure and, above all, the geometric decoration are more clearly associated with Kuba productions.
Origin: Kuba, Kasai region, D.R. Congo | Period: First half of the 20th century | Material: Wood | Height: 26.5 cm | Weight: 565 g | Condition: Wear, patina, and minor alterations consistent with age and use.
