Kuba Belt Embellished with Cauri Shells - Lot 106
Kuba Belt Embellished with Cauri Shells
A long ceremonial Kuba belt made of braided plant fibers and lavishly adorned with cauri shells sewn in regular rows. The supple, elongated structure features flared ends and a rhythmic decorative pattern covering much of the surface. This type of accessory was worn as a symbol of prestige and adornment, as cowrie shells were associated with wealth, status, and authority. It has a beautiful antique patina, with wear and slight losses consistent with its age and use.
