Bembe maternity statue - Democratic Republic of the Congo - - Lot 100
Bembe maternity statue - Democratic Republic of the Congo - mid 20th century
Bembe sculpture representing a standing female figure carrying a child on her back, a classic theme of maternity and transmission in Central African art. The figure features an upright, hieratic posture, an elongated torso and a stylized face with angular features, almond-shaped eyes and a finely sculpted mouth. The child appears in a small receptacle on the back, evoking traditional baby-carrying. The skirt is decorated with incised geometric motifs, while the head features a short coiffure. Light brown patina with traces of use and age.
