Kuba palm wine bowl - Democratic Republic of the Congo - mid - Lot 55
Kuba palm wine bowl - Democratic Republic of the Congo - mid 20th century
Palm wine cup carved in dense wood by a Kuba craftsman, in the form of a stylized female head resting on a small circular foot. The face features regular lines, almond-shaped half-closed eyes, a straight nose and a finely drawn mouth. The elaborate headdress is decorated with finely incised geometric registers and sculpted bands evoking traditional Kuba hairstyles. At the back, an arched handle was used to hold the vessel during ritual or ceremonial consumption of palm wine. The dark, patinated surface testifies to prolonged use and handling.
Height : 14.5 cm - Weight : 200 g
