Pende axe with carved handle, DR Congo, first half 20th century Iron axe mounted on a long wooden handle, the head of the handle carved with a stylized face in slight relief below the grip area; the face has geometrical features with almond-shaped eyes, straight nose and small mouth, hairstyle indicated by incisions; the upper part of the handle is reinforced by an angular zone decorated with small metal inlays arranged in rows; the iron blade, flared and slightly curved, is fixed transversely in the head; this type of axe is associated with the Pende populations of DR Congo and could be used as a prestige object or status badge.
