Chokwe/Lwena - Democratic Republic of the Congo - Flycatcher with feminine figurative handle - First half of the 20th century
This flycatcher features a sculpted handle depicting a standing female figure with arms swept forward. The head features a high ridged hairstyle, typical of certain Central African representations. The handle is extended by a copper wire ligature holding a tuft of black hair forming the functional part of the fly swatter. The wood surface has a dark brown patina from use and handling. This type of object was used to hunt insects, but also as a prestige badge or status accessory in various social and ceremonial contexts in Central Africa.
