Kuba whistle - DR Congo - first half of the 20th century
Small wooden whistle with a pear-shaped body and blowing opening at the top, featuring two perforated lateral protrusions for a suspension cord. The surface is entirely structured by reliefs and incisions forming vertical bands and stripes evoking a stylized headdress, a motif frequently found in objects from the Kuba region. Dark brown wood with a patina of use and visible signs of wear around the mouthpiece. These whistles were worn around the neck and used as signal instruments during hunting activities or in social and ritual contexts. Provenance : Kuba, DR Congo.
