Pende mask with textile headdress and plant fiber beard, first half 20th century, DR Congo
Wood-carved mask of the Pende people, featuring a stylized face with geometric features, marked superciliary arches forming a continuous line, half-closed eyes in relief, triangular nose and narrow mouth; the cheeks are decorated with diamond-shaped incised motifs and the lower part is extended by a beard made of plant fibers; the upper part is completed by a woven textile and fiber headdress attached to the top of the mask; the hollowed-out interior and the patina of use indicate an object intended for ritual and dance performances; the whole shows traces of wear compatible with a dating to the first half of the 20th century.
