Wooden Reliquary Pedestal for a Statue of a Saint – 18th Cen - Lot 125
Wooden Reliquary Pedestal for a Statue of a Saint – 18th Century A wooden reliquary pedestal, designed to support a statue of a saint or a devotional sculpture, dating from the 18th century. Rectangular in shape with beveled edges, it rests on a molded base and features a significantly overhanging upper section. The sides are adorned with several oval and circular glass openings containing fragments of relics set against textile backgrounds, including a red background decorated with small gilded motifs. The wooden structure retains its original patina as well as numerous signs of age. The back is open, revealing the internal construction and the reverse sides of the reliquary compartments. The piece shows signs of wear, scratches, small losses, cracks, holes from wood-boring insects, and deterioration of the interior elements, consistent with its age. This type of pedestal combined a practical function—supporting a sacred figure—with a devotional function through the presence of relics. Period: 18th century Dimensions: Width: 42.5 cm Depth: 23.5 cm Height: 16 cm Weight: 2.3 kg
