Large Flemish brass church candleholder, late 17th–early 18t - Lot 109
Large Flemish brass church candleholder, late 17th–early 18th century
A substantial brass church candleholder resting on a triangular three-legged base, characteristic of certain Flemish works from the late 17th century. The tall baluster shaft, composed of turned elements with elegant profiles, is topped by a wide circular wax catcher designed to collect dripping wax. The long central wrought-iron spike was used to secure a large candle used during religious services. The simplicity of the ornamentation, the quality of the casting, and the balance of the proportions attest to the craftsmanship of the Flemish workshops. Retaining a beautiful antique patina and traces of its liturgical use, this piece is a remarkable example of religious furnishings from the former Southern Netherlands.
