Pair of gaucho spurs, Argentina, 19th century - Lot 58
Pair of gaucho spurs, Argentina, 19th century
Pair of gaucho spurs from the Río de la Plata region, in Argentina or Uruguay, dating from the late 19th century, circa 1880–1900. Entirely forged from iron, they are adorned with damascene inlays of alpaca (nickel silver). The large star-shaped spurs, 12.5 cm in diameter with long points, are characteristic of the traditional espuelas grandes used by South American riders. The curved shanks and engraved decoration attest to high-quality craftsmanship. Signs of wear, the antique patina, and partial loss of inlay reflect authentic use and enhance the historical significance of this pair.
