Lacquered Jingasa with the Hosokawa Clan Crest – Japan, Edo - Lot 33
Lacquered Jingasa with the Hosokawa Clan Crest – Japan, Edo Period An imposing Japanese jingasa made of lacquered wood, dating from the Edo period, featuring a slightly domed circular shape. The exterior is covered in deep black lacquer and adorned with gold lacquer in the form of large concentric circles, as well as the Hosokawa clan crest—composed of nine discs and known as the Hosokawa kuyō-mon. The reverse side, lacquered red, retains its original metal mounting hardware. The piece is displayed on a modern black metal base, specially designed to showcase it. Jingasa were worn by samurai and members of feudal retinues during travel, ceremonies, and certain military functions. The Hosokawa clan was among the oldest and most powerful daimyō families in Japan. During the Edo period, it ruled the vast domain of Kumamoto and was one of the archipelago’s leading landowners. The surface shows signs of use, including small scratches, scuffs, and some irregularities in the lacquer, consistent with its age. Provenance: -Finchco, London/Brussels; Exhibited (BRAFA Art Fair, 2021, Brussels) Details: Diameter: 42.5 cm; Weight: 1.7 kg
