Kusuri-dansu – apothecary cabinet – Meiji-period Japan - Lot 70
Kusuri-dansu – apothecary cabinet – Meiji-period Japan
A rare kusuri-dansu (薬箪笥), a small Japanese apothecary cabinet from the late Meiji period, crafted from wood with rich yosegi-zaiku marquetry from the Hakone region. The drawer fronts are adorned with traditional geometric motifs, including asanoha, kikkō, and trompe-l’œil cubes, crafted from various types of wood. The hinged lid reveals an upper compartment with a black-lacquered interior, decorated with mother-of-pearl (raden) inlays featuring floral motifs. The cabinet comprises nine drawers of varying sizes, each bearing a hand-engraved assembly mark characteristic of traditional Japanese workshops. The brass hardware, handles, and corner braces are original. The key is missing. This type of cabinet was intended for storing remedies, medicinal herbs, or small precious objects and is a fine example of Japanese decorative art from the Meiji period. Condition: In good overall condition with signs of wear consistent with its age. The marquetry and inlays are well preserved, and the structure is stable.
Dimensions: Height 38.5 cm – Width 35.5 cm – Depth 18.5 cm.
