Spinario – bronze sculpture – “Grand Tour” – late 19th centu - Lot 127
Spinario – bronze sculpture – “Grand Tour” – late 19th century
A bronze sculpture with a dark brown patina depicting the Spinario (or The Boy with the Thorn), a famous figure from Roman antiquity portraying a young boy sitting and removing a thorn from his foot. This work is a scaled-down version inspired by the ancient bronze housed at the Capitoline Museums in Rome, a model that was widely reproduced during the 19th century as part of the so-called “Grand Tour” production.
The composition faithfully captures the character’s introspective pose, seated on a rock with his head tilted toward his foot as he removes the thorn. The quality of the casting highlights the anatomical modeling, the wavy hair, and the characteristic volumes of the ancient model. The sculpture rests on a circular bronze base. An old handwritten label is preserved beneath the base.
