H. Gauquié, Bronze Archer, early 20th century - Lot 126
H. Gauquié, Bronze Archer, early 20th century
A large bronze sculpture with a brown patina depicting a young, nude archer standing in a dynamic pose, holding his bow while a quiver is strapped to his back. The composition highlights a naturalistic study of anatomy and movement, characteristic of French sculpture of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The work is signed “H. Gauquié” on the pedestal. It rests on a naturalistic base depicting rocky terrain with a fallen bird, reinforcing the narrative quality of the scene. The cast is of fine quality, with a uniform brown patina. The sculpture also bears a circular foundry mark on the pedestal. Henri Gauquié (1858–1927) was a French sculptor trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, a student of Jules Cavelier and Louis-Ernest Barrias. He exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français, where he won several awards. His body of work includes monumental sculptures, commemorative monuments, and limited-edition bronzes inspired by mythological and allegorical subjects.
