Engraved Horn Powder Flask – 17th Century - Lot 114
Engraved Horn Powder Flask – 17th Century
A carved and finely engraved horn powder flask, complete with its iron fittings, including the spout, the dispensing mechanism, and the hanging hook. The surface is entirely adorned with geometric, floral, and scroll motifs executed by incision, while the base features a stylized depiction of a sun face set within a radiant star. This type of decoration is characteristic of certain Central and Western European productions from the 17th and early 18th centuries.
Horn powder flasks were an indispensable part of the equipment of arquebusiers, musketeers, and hunters. They were used to carry black powder while protecting it from moisture and were equipped with a metal mechanism that allowed for precise measurement of the powder charge. Richly engraved, handcrafted examples were often personal items reflecting their owners’ tastes.
This example retains its original metal mechanism as well as its hanging hook. It displays a beautiful patina consistent with its age.
Details: Length: 23 cm – Weight: 0.317 kg.
