J. Carpentier – magneto ohmmeter – circa 1935 - Lot 113
J. Carpentier – magneto ohmmeter – circa 1935
A 200-volt internal magneto ohmmeter manufactured by J. Carpentier, an engineer and manufacturer in Paris, presented in its original wooden case with dovetail joints. Designed to measure the insulation resistance of electrical installations, cables, motors, and transformers, this device operates using a magneto driven by a side crank and directly displays readings in megaohms.
The case retains its original dial under glass, its printed instruction manual, the crank, and several brass accessories. The J. Carpentier workshops, successors to the famous Ruhmkorff workshops, were among the leading French manufacturers of scientific and electrical measuring instruments in the late 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. In particular, they supplied equipment to laboratories, electric power companies, railroads, and the Post, Telegraph, and Telephone Service.
This example is a representative example of French professional electrical instrumentation from the interwar period.
