Mortar from Le Puy – bronze – 17th century - Lot 93
Mortar from Le Puy – bronze – 17th century An apothecary’s mortar made of cast bronze, produced in Le Puy-en-Velay, one of the leading French centers for mortar casting in the 16th and 17th centuries. This model features a flared truncated cone shape with a wide rim, resting on a circular base. The body is adorned with baluster-shaped relief buttresses arranged regularly around it, a decorative motif characteristic of many Vellave productions from this period. The cast iron is thick and of fine quality, displaying an antique patina and signs of wear consistent with its age. The mortars produced in Le Puy-en-Velay were intended for apothecaries, but also for kitchens and bourgeois residences. Today, they stand as a representative testament to the craftsmanship of 17th-century French casters. Details: Height: 6 cm – Diameter: 11 cm – Weight: 0.600 kg.
