Japanese maki-e lacquer kushi – early 20th century - Lot 86
Japanese maki-e lacquer kushi – early 20th century
Japanese comb (kushi) in gold-brown lacquer, decorated in maki-e with a motif of bamboo and stylized leaves rendered in dark reserve with highlights of metallic powders. The decoration, spread across both sides, evokes a simple and elegant botanical landscape, characteristic of the Japanese aesthetic of the late Meiji and early Taishō periods. This type of comb was worn with the kimono and served as a traditional accessory for women’s hairstyles. Shows slight signs of wear consistent with its age.
