Japanese maki-e lacquer kushi – early 20th century - Lot 81
Japanese maki-e lacquer kushi – early 20th century Japanese comb (kushi) made of wood covered with golden-brown lacquer, decorated in the maki-e style with leafy branches and stylized fruits accented with gold, red, and black powders. This type of comb was part of traditional Japanese women’s attire and was used with elaborate hairstyles, often paired with other hair ornaments (kanzashi). The delicacy of the lacquer and decoration is characteristic of works from the late Meiji and early Taishō periods. Signs of wear and slight chipping consistent with its age.
