Gongshi – scholar's rock – China – Qing Dynasty Chinese gongshi (scholar's rock), also known as "dream stone" or "scholar's stone," is a natural stone with gray-black and cream-colored veins, mounted on an antique carved wooden base. The natural cavities, strata, and eroded forms evoke a miniature mountainous landscape, in keeping with the tradition of objects of contemplation among Chinese scholars. Popular during the Ming and Qing dynasties, gongshi were displayed in study rooms as objects for meditation and aesthetic appreciation.
