Indo-Persian “Dhal” Shield – Steel with Koftgari – 19th cent - Lot 63
Indo-Persian “Dhal” Shield – Steel with Koftgari – 19th century Indo-Persian circular shield (dhal) made of forged steel, decorated with koftgari, a technique involving the inlaying of gold threads or leaf into a finely striated steel surface. The face features four hemispherical bosses designed to protect the fastenings of the interior handles. The rim is adorned with a frieze of animal figures made of brass or a copper alloy, depicting, in particular, felines, deer, hares, and other stylized animals, complemented by engraved and inlaid floral and plant motifs. The reverse retains its original textile lining as well as its central red velvet pad and the grip handles, attesting to its original configuration. This type of shield, produced in North India and in regions influenced by the Persian tradition, was intended as much for ceremonial display as for military or ceremonial use in the 19th century. Details: Diameter: 38 cm – Weight: 1.300 kg.
