Islamic platter – engraved copper – Syria – 18th/19th centur - Lot 62
Islamic platter – engraved copper – Syria – 18th/19th century A circular platter made of hammered and engraved copper, produced in Syria in the 18th century. The rim is adorned with a continuous frieze of finely incised geometric interlacing patterns, while the center of the dish features a circular medallion containing a stylized calligraphic inscription in Arabic script. The combination of calligraphy and geometric motifs is characteristic of Syrian copperwork from the Ottoman period, in which engraved ornamentation played a central role. Crafted from hammered copper and then hand-engraved, this platter attests to the craftsmanship of Syrian workshops specializing in metalwork. It features an antique patina, with traces of oxidation and wear consistent with its age. The understated and balanced design makes it a fine example of 18th-century Syrian copperwork. Details: Diameter: 22 cm – Weight: 0.350 kg.
