Box—carved corozo nut—19th century - Lot 11
Box—carved corozo nut—19th century
A turned and finely carved corozo box in the shape of a dog’s head, with the dog’s mouth holding a bone tip. The body is richly decorated with high-relief floral motifs, foliage, and openwork scrollwork, reflecting particularly meticulous carving. This type of object was made in the 19th century as a pocket box or curiosity piece; corozo—also known as vegetable ivory—was prized for its hardness and the fine detail it allowed for.
It shows signs of wear, small natural cracks in the material, and a few minor imperfections consistent with its age.
Details: Length: 9 cm – Width: 4 cm – Weight: 40 g.
