Openwork Sculpture - Corozo – 19th century - Lot 9
Openwork Sculpture - Corozo – 19th century
A turned and finely openworked sculpture in corozo, also known as vegetable ivory, depicting an architectural composition in the form of a baluster. The design combines stylized leaves, plant scrolls, and a heraldic cartouche in the center, executed with deep carving that highlights the hardness and delicacy of this material. Corozo, derived from the nut of the Phytelephas palm, was widely used in the 19th century for creating small decorative objects and precision carvings. The piece features a beautiful antique patina as well as a few shrinkage cracks and signs of wear consistent with its age.
