Openwork corozo nut sculpture – box – 19th century - Lot 1
Openwork corozo nut sculpture – box – 19th century A finely carved and openwork corozo sculpture in the form of a lidded box. The baluster-shaped body is richly adorned with high-relief decoration featuring flowers, garlands, symbolic motifs, and plant motifs. The removable lid is topped by a sculpted group depicting a young woman seated beside a child under a tree. The piece as a whole illustrates the quality of the work in corozo, a plant-based material prized in the 19th century for its fine texture, which allowed for highly detailed carving. Some wear and minor signs of use consistent with its age. Details: Height: 19 cm – Diameter: 6 cm – Weight: 0.025 kg.
