Wrought-iron door lock, handcrafted, 17th–18th century - Lot 108
Wrought-iron door lock, handcrafted, 17th–18th century
A large wrought-iron lock with an exposed mechanism, handcrafted and featuring a cut-out plate with scalloped edges adorned with stylized plant motifs. The internal mechanism retains its sliding bolt, spring, and several original forged components. This type of lock was intended for the doors of residences, religious buildings, or rural structures. The entirely hand-forged construction, the irregularity of the surfaces, and the assembly techniques are indicative of pre-industrial craftsmanship. Beautiful antique patina and wear consistent with its age.
