Still Life with Birds, signed Édouard Quitton (1842–1913) - Lot 86
Still Life with Birds, signed Édouard Quitton (1842–1913)
Oil on panel depicting a hunting still life composed of three birds suspended by colorful ribbons. The red cardinal, the goldfinch, and the chickadee are rendered with great finesse, highlighting the textures of the plumage and the chromatic contrasts. The presence of a painted fly reinforces the illusionistic effect sought by the artist. This composition follows in the tradition of naturalistic still lifes from the late 19th century. Signed “Édouard Quitton” in the lower right corner. Édouard Quitton (1842–1913) was a Belgian painter active in Antwerp, known for his depictions of birds, animals, and his trompe-l’œil compositions.
