Oil on canvas depicting a rider in dark attire and a top hat - Lot 83

Oil on canvas depicting a rider in dark attire and a top hat mounted on a black horse. The figure is portrayed in an open landscape beneath a cloud-laden sky, in the tradition of equestrian portraiture that associated elegance, social status, and mastery of horsemanship. The composition is distinguished by the contrast between the horse’s dark silhouette and the lighter tones of the horizon. The work bears a signature “J.P. Dejonghe” accompanied by the date 1812 in the lower left corner. This signature may refer to the Belgian painter Jean-Baptiste De Jonghe (1790–1848), an artist known primarily for his landscapes; however, a definitive attribution cannot be confirmed based solely on photographic examination. Presented in a wooden frame with gilded stucco and rocaille decoration. Details: Image size: 42 x 30 cm – Height: 52 cm – Width: 40 cm – Weight: 1.500 kg.
